A RELATION STRENGTHENED
Bali Hotels Public Relations got together for an inspiring afternoon with a public relations expert

HHPB Gathering

Nusa Dua, Bali - September 2010. One may think that working on a paradise island such as Bali will be like a holiday. True, but only to some extent; this is a different case for the people of tourism industry, especially hotels and resorts' Public Relations. With many things to promote, from a simple dining experience to a famous celebrity visit and social activities, they are 'expected' to keep an eye and ear on everything.

On Monday, September 6th, Himpunan Humas Perhotelan Bali (HHPB) or Bali Hotels Public Relations Association, arranged an afternoon get-together at Oolooloos Entertainment Center, Nikko Bali Resort and Spa, with public relations expert, Tom O'Brien, of Mandarin Media, an established public relations consultant who recently opened up a branch in Bali. During his workshop, Tom shared the insight of required public relations activities that will work with the media, sharing several tips and tricks he has up his sleeve to more than 20 public relations managers and officers attending the program.

The afternoon continued with a voting for the new chairman of the association to take the place of the current chairman, Sugeng Purnomo, Director of Marketing Communications of The Laguna, a Luxury Collection Resort and Spa, Nusa Dua, Bali; voted as the new chairman was Aswin Pranoto, Public Relations Manager of Nikko Bali Resort and Spa and Meutia Mahardika, Public Relations Manager of Bali Hyatt as the vice-chairman of the association. Concluding the program, all members got together for a group photo session before enjoying a lavish cocktail in the gardens of Nikko Bali Resort and Spa.

GOING GREEN - A CAMPAIGN FOR LIFE
Nikko Bali Resort and Spa continues its effort to create a greener hotel for a greener future

nikko goes green

Nusa Dua, Bali - September 2010. With current issues of global warming, waste management and saving energy, it is no wonder that a large organization like Nikko Bali Resort and Spa has decided to do its part for a better future - for life and for the organization itself.

Green Efforts
Several months ago, the resort invited an international environment consultant, TUV Rheinland, the certified company issuing the Eco-Hotel certification for hotels around the world. After a thorough assessment, TUV Rheinland submitted its review along with several suggestions to further enhance the existing actions along with new steps to be taken to maximize the efforts already in place.

"We've placed information cards in our guest rooms asking them to help us save the environment by changing their linens and towel every other day to minimize chemical waste from the laundry process" explained Jean-Charles Le Coz, the General Manager of Nikko Bali Resort and Spa, "Through our associates, we also 'teach' children who are our junior VIPs at the Jungle Camp to help the environment, simply by throwing garbage in the provided bins, saving water and other simple actions that they can remember."

According to Ketut Supartha, the Safety Environment and Energy Conservation Manager of the resort, also a member of the resort's own environment organization, P2K3LH, the hotel has managed to save costs, reduce waste and do its part in conserving the environment. Recently the hotel organized two turtle release events from the nests found on the beach.

Working together with the local community and the R.O.L.E Foundation, Nikko Bali Resort and Spa also organizes weekly beach cleaning to manage the trash and seaweeds washed ashore frequently. "The island lives from tourism and it is our duty to keep the beach clean" said Ketut Supartha.

A Greener Campaign
Recently, the resort launched a campaign called "Nikko Bali Goes Green" to further expose its green efforts to their associates as well as the guests. "Creating awareness, that's the main goal. People basically know what they can do to support this, the campaign functions as constant reminder of how they can take part in doing something for the environment" said Jean-Charles.

Taking the existing fountain logo of the resort, the campaign used a green leafy texture as the colour to represent the purpose of the campaign. To introduce the campaign publicly, Nikko Bali Resort and Spa will soon launch the first series of posters on the website and the preferred design will be printed (using biodegradable material and soy ink) and posted around the resort.

"We still have a long way to go, but each little step, no matter how small can actually make a difference" said Jean-Charles. Green efforts for a greener future, so what have you done today to help the earth?

THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS, A BUSINESS IN PARADISE
The unusual marriage of two opposite worlds, business and pleasure, a successful story by Nikko Bali Resort and Spa

nikko bali ballroom

August 2010 - Nusa Dua. The terms "mixing business with pleasure" may often cause a professional to frown and be considered somewhat taboo in the "workplace". But what if these two very opposite words could go hand in hand in the professional world? Not in the terms of entertainment industry but as in serious, focused events such as a meeting, a conference, as in the world of MICE. That is what the island of Bali has to offer for your association or company.

A harmonious blend
Bali is on most people's list of places to visit. The Island of the Gods is adorned with nature's beauty, surrounded by long sandy beaches and magnificent views. The island is a harmonious blend of tradition, culture, art and religion. This year, Bali was voted fourth-best top ten favorite islands in Asia by reader's choice in Travel+Leisure South East Asia and also featured in the latest Julia Robert's movie "Eat, Pray, Love" based on the bestselling book with the same title. Being on the list of top holiday destinations, Bali now also has taken its place in the world as a MICE destination. Many international events, exhibitions and conferences have been held here in the last couple of years; for example the United Nations Climate Change Conference held last year in Nusa Dua.

A southern charm
On the southern tip of the island, lies Nusa Dua, the enclave for 5-star international resorts. Sitting atop a 40-metre cliff, Nikko Bali Resort and Spa, invites you to a world of personal hospitality, with traditional Balinese warmth, combined with attentive and refined service. For this 389 room resort, marrying both worlds of business and pleasure is no longer an unusual thing to do as it has been the mission of its MICE department all these years.

Under the supervision of Ketut Gita, Director of Banquet Sales and Operations, Nikko Bali Resort and Spa can customize any MICE needs and take it another STEP UP to make it feel less business like and more as a "bliss-ness" - while still maintaining the level of seriousness of the whole event. "Options" said Ketut Gita when asked about what the resort has to offer, "We wish to give our clients more options, a fully customized event that can fit their needs. This allows us to personalize everything to the very last details". From giving options to their clients to offering alternative venues, activities, set ups, decorations even a personalized private dinner, Nikko Bali Resort and Spa can fully customize your needs.

Rave reviews
Recently, Nikko Bali Resort and Spa hosted two major events at their ballroom, Graha Sawangan, and received rave comments from both clients. They managed to extend the hospitality, that is uniquely Bali, the beautiful scenery, laid back atmosphere and traditional culture of the island to each client and 'introduce' them to a new level of MICE, the successful marriage of both worlds.

"Nikko Bali Resort and Spa really took care of us and gave us their full attention" said John O'Brien, Vice President Asia Pacific of FrontRange Solutions Asia Pacific Pty Ltd. "We have had unequivocal feedback about the way the hotel and the staff conducted themselves and how helpful everyone was".

Meanwhile, Joanne Heng of IBM Asia Pacific commented "It has been a pleasant experience for everyone and the credit is due to the efficiency demonstrated by your team. We look forward to organizing future corporate events with your hotel".

"These rave reviews have set the bar for us", said Ketut Gita, "any events held at the resort will be at least at the same level of service and products".

So, MICE can be fun and holiday-ish after all and here's to the person that said "you cannot mix business with pleasure", Nikko Bali Resort and Spa has proven you wrong and challenge you to experience this beautiful harmony at the Island of the Gods.

THE HARMONY OF DANCE, THE HARMONY OF LIFE
Celebration of art through the 5th annual cultural appreciation nights
at Nikko Bali Resort and Spa

Cultural Night

Bali has always been known to be a very harmonious island. The people celebrate life through their religion, culture and art. With influences from around the world such as India and the neighboring island, Java, Balinese culture has evolved in its own unique way creating a truly magical sight to behold.

Marrying its belief, culture and life's passion, Bali created many forms of dances which are performed in many celebrations, ceremonies, rituals or simply for entertainment. Each dance has its own story, from the tale of two bumblebees in love to the epic story of Ramayana – a Hindu influenced love story and the fight between good and evil. Some are fast paced, some are slow, some are very spiritual and some even comedic.

Repeating the success story of previous years, Nikko Bali Resort and Spa will soon celebrate this culture heritage with the 5th annual cultural appreciation nights throughout the month of August. Taking place at the resort's amphitheater, Kupu Kupu, the program will feature performances by the best dancers in Bali including the talented students of Indonesia Institute of Art (Institut Seni Indonesia) and the children's Gong Kebyar troop that has performed in the Bali Art Festival earlier this year. In addition to the cultural program will feature several regular performances like the classic Barong dance and Kecak dance. Each performance will be accompanied by authentic Balinese cuisine specially prepared by the culinary team of Nikko Bali Resort and Spa. With each performance, guests will receive a complimentary Balinese attire of sarong, udeng or sash.

This activity is but one in a series of cultural events done by the resort in 2010: the weekly Kampoeng Bali - a dedication to the Balinese life, regular dance performances and the recent support done by the resort to the Bali is My Life program in June.
