MARCH 2006 |
NYEPI
DAY
a silence day to mark Balinese New Year |
Balinese people celebrate their New Year 1928 according to the
Caka Calendar which call Nyepi day on 30 March 2006. There are
several processions need to be done to celebrate Nyepi Day,
as follows: |
 |
Melasti
(three days before Nyepi)
Melasti is the ceremony which is aimed to clean all nature
and its content and also to take Amerta (the source for
eternal life) from the ocean or other water resources. |
 |
Tawur Agung Kesanga
(one day before Nyepi)
Tawur Kesanga is the day when exorcisms are carried out
at the main village crossroads which is where the demons
supposedly meet. This is when many Ogoh-Ogoh (the fantastic
monster or evil spirits or the Butha Kala made of bamboo)
are carried through the town in a carnival. Bleganjur;
Balinese gamelan music accompanies the procession. Since
they represent the evil spirits, they all look frighteningly
ugly with fangs and bulging eyes. At night the Ogoh-Ogoh
are set on fire to free the island of the evil spirits. |

|
Nyepi
Nyepi is the New Year in the Balinese Hindu Caka Calendar.
Balinese people celebrate it with meditation in silence.
No activities are allowed to take place. These mandatory
religious prohibitions include no pleasure (amati lelangon),
no traffic (amati lelungan), no fire (amati geni) and
no work (amati karya). These prohibitions aim at controlling
one's self and submission to God. Everybody has to stay
in their houses. No lights, no sounds, and no work, just
keep silent. On Nyepi the world is expected to be clean
and everything starts anew. |
 |
Ngembak Geni
(the day after Nyepi)
This is the day when Catur Berata Penyepian is over and
Hindus societies usually visit to forgive each other and
doing the activities of reading Sloka, Kekidung (ancient
scripts containing songs and lyrics). |

NIKKO BALI HOSTS 'MYSTICAL' APPRECIATION PARTY
Nusa Dua – Bali, March 2006…
To mark the beginning of a series of events in celebration
of its 10th anniversary, Nikko Bali Resort & Spa recently
hosted an exclusive appreciation party. The extensive guest
list included travel agents, media representatives, airlines,
consulates and other colleagues who have supported the resort
over the past decade.
With a party theme ‘an evening of unbelievable
illusions’, festivities commenced with a welcoming cocktail
reception held in a garden setting lit by flaming torches.
All invited guests were asked to dress in black, which added
to the overall mystery of the evening. After an hour of social
interaction and savouring tasty Balinese styled canapés,
the gathering was called to attention by a group of Jungle
dancers who suddenly appeared out of the darkness.
The crowd was then ushered along an unlit
tunnel into the grand ballroom that was swathed totally in
black for maximum effect. A pair of fantasy dance creatures
on stilts weaved amongst the elegant table settings to generate
an element of the unknown.
In his brief opening speech General Manager,
Mr. Thierry Joho, expressed his pleasure that so many old
and new friends were in attendance. He sincerely thanked everyone
for their ongoing support of Nikko Bali Resort & Spa,
and looked forward to continuing strong relationships in the
future.
During a delicious Asian orientated buffet
dinner, relaxing background music was provided by jazz quartet
playing a medley of popular tunes. This was followed by a
choreographed fashion parade showcasing a stunning collection
of male and female clothing designs. Next came a display of
capoeira, which is an Afro-Brazilian martial art involving
a sequence of energetic moves set to an incessant drumming
rhythm.
The highlight of the evening was a performance
by renowned Indonesian mentalist, Deddy Corbuzier who enthralled
the audience with his unique brand of magic and mind reading
abilities. The party proved to be a huge success concluding
with the Master of Ceremonies inviting all guests back to
Nikko Bali for future events and departing into the night
on a roaring Harley Davidson motorcycle.
This stylish party was just the first of
10 special events that will be scheduled every month for the
remainder of this year. The grand finale of Nikko Bali Resort
& Spa’s 10th anniversary celebrations will be a
birthday party extravaganza for employees and underprivileged
children filled with fun games, entertainment and generous
donations. |
